I Like Amanda Quick

July 25, 2009 at 10:26 pm (Romance Books) (, )

It’s a crazy time right now – so I’m feeling stressed.  To help myself unwind at night I went to my “Keepers” shelf and picked out some Amanda Quick novels.  I’ve been reading the Vanza story lines and enjoying them immensely.  Found Book 2 of the Arcane Society books at the local dollar store (what a find among the cookbooks and such).  Enjoyed those so much, I’ve decided to read the rest in that series.  “Second Sight” will be arriving in the mail soon. I can’t wait 🙂

How Much Money is there in E-publishing?

February 18, 2008 at 6:21 pm (Romance Books, Samhain) (, , , , , , , , )

I think the answer depends on if you’re an author or a publisher 🙂

Emily Veinglory had a short post on 2007 earnings over at the Erotic Romance blog.  In the comments other people shared their earnings and their opinions.  And as usual whenever money comes up the comments become a bit of a pep ralley about the advantages of being an e-published author over a NY publisher (with Harlequin being mentioned by name.)

One person commented that her backlist of e-books was really starting to make a difference in her royalty check each month.  While this is a plus of being e-published, I believe that most of the NY publishers are catching on to the $$$ to made by e-books.  My guess is that this digital, always-available backlist is going to aid mid-list NY published authors’ earnings as well.  I don’t know how contracts are worded for NY authors – I’m sure they don’t get monthly royalties like e-pubs – but I’m pretty certain agents aren’t going to let the publishers make all the money on the e-books.

I recently heard a Harlequin author speak about her earnings.  She releases an average of 3 catagory novels in a year and over a 2 year period she’ll make around $20,000 per book.  That’s not just an advance, but total earnings from domestic and foreign sales.   This author asked not to be mentioned by name, but I trust what she was saying because it was face to face.

Something to think about.

Why I love the “Teach Me Tonight” Blog

January 26, 2008 at 9:50 pm (romance, Romance Books, Things that are Fun)

So some woman with an opinion did a piece about the evils of Romance Novels.  She got it published in the Guardian.

Here’s the smart response by the “Teach Me Tonight” crew: http://teachmetonight.blogspot.com/2007/12/bindel-piece-by-piece.html

Now if only I could make their intelligent thoughts fit on a T-shirt logo….

HALF MOON RISING is out in PRINT & 4 Stars at RTBook Review

October 30, 2007 at 9:09 pm (Books of Interest, Half Moon Rising, Margo Lukas Books, Romance Books) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

This is what December 2007 Romantic Times Book Review had to say about Half Moon Rising:

“[an] entertaining and action-packed addition to the werewolf genre…”

“…characters are likable, the villain is nicely evil and the ending is highly satisfactory.”

They gave the book 4 stars! Yippy! Needless to say–I’m thrilled.

Today is also the day it is available in print.  You can buy it any of these links: Barnes and Noble.com, Amazon.com, and MBAM (Samhain’s store).

FREE SHORT STORY!

October 2, 2007 at 5:36 pm (Half Moon Rising, Margo Lukas Books, romance, Romance Books) (, , , , , )

I’ve added a new 2000 word short story to my page menu– Half Moon Origins: The Witch’s Spellboook  Check it out–the heroine isn’t your usual girl–she’s an elderly witch!  Hey, romance doesn’t end when you’re a senior citzen 🙂

Here’ the intro paragraphs.

Village of Lucia, Spain; 1485

The moonlight glowed too dimly through the cottage window.  The thick wax seal remained an undecipherable blur to the old witch, her eyes clouded by years spent toiling in the garden.

While the stranger loomed over her small table, Isabel DeLagado caressed the wax ridges and let her fingertips prove the truth of the package’s sender.

Surprise jolted her frail frame.  “The seal of the Alpha King himself?”

Carlos, her companion, protectively laid his gnarled hand on her shoulder, mistaking her awe for fear.  Her lover’s struggle to bring his frame to full height filled her with sadness.  Alas, any defense Carlos mustered against the stranger would have been useless.  Utterly useless.   READ THE STORY’S END.

2007 Chase the Dream Writers Contest! Enter this Contest!

September 5, 2007 at 10:19 am (Cool Web Stuff, Romance Books, Things that are Fun)

Stand up and take notice on this one! The 2007 Chase the Dream contest is up and running. Sponsored by romance authors Leigh Michaels and Rachelle Chase this is a great chance to get your work in front of published authors, agents, and editors.

Both these ladies are smart and professional and will treat you and your entries with respect. Here are the official contest rules. One of the great things about this contest is that even if you aren’t chosen as a weekly finalist, you may have a chance for a free critique from Leigh Michaels. Do not pass up this chance!

Here are the agents and editors they have lined up so far: Paula Eykelhof, Elaine English, and Cheryl Ferguson.

Wonder why I’m so gung-ho on this contest? I won this contest last year with my first 1000 words of HALF MOON RISING and that win led directly to my contract with Samhain.

Please check out the contest site when you have a chance. It has all the important info. You won’t regret it.

A Five Rose Review!

July 14, 2007 at 11:54 pm (Half Moon Rising, Margo Lukas Books, Romance Books)

Okay, I’ve been a good girl and not “googled” for any reviews for a few weeks.  But tonight I had some time and I found a new review for Half Moon Rising at My Book Cravings.

Robin S. has this to say in her review:

“Here’s a keeper for you.  If you are anything like me, you like romances, paranormal and a contemporary setting.  You will find love, laughter, and a whodunit all in one.”

And later she mentions she’d like to see Mario have his own story.  I’m so glad to hear that because as I work on Roz and Sebastian’s novella story, I’m planning Mario’s novel length story.

Robin’s kind words are a great motivator as I work on their stories.

Okay, I just have to go watch the end of SNL.

Hope everyone is staying cool.  The heat has returned here and I am so thankful for air conditioning 🙂

The Paranormal and Romance: Perfect Together

July 6, 2007 at 11:10 pm (About Margo, Romance Books)

I was reading some of the older posts about ghosts the other day and a memory came back to me. A memory of my first romantic fantasy.

I had to be about ten or eleven…and I had a fantasy about a ghost boy who was a character in an ABC “After School Special” (remember those?). It was called “The Red Room Riddle”. All I can recall was that the ghost boy had beautiful blond curly hair and was trapped in the red room inside of an old mansion.

Don’t remember exactly how I turned that into a romance in my little elementary brain, but do remember having them.

And that made me wonder why some of us love our paranormals and other romance readers just shake their head. Obviously even as a young reader, paranormal stories appealed to me the same as it did to the millions who read similar books. But for some reason I took it step further and wanted my stories to have not only paranormal/fantasy elements but romance, too.

Why does paranormal and romance seem like such a natural fit to some of us and not to others? Have you ever tried to explain the appeal of the paranormal to others who don’t read them? I have one relative whose voice drips with sarcasm every time she mentions “a werewolf romance”…in a way that makes it seem like the craziest thing in the world. Never mind telling her that millions of readers like to read about vampires and werewolves finding true love.

Monsters in love. Monsters redeemed and forgiven all sorts of sins. Monsters forgiven and loved by not only the heroine, but also the reader. Perhaps what truly defines our paranormal genre is not the characters (who vary from god to demon, vampire to angel) but the readers.

Maybe we’re the “thing” about paranormal romances that make them work. Could it be that the lover of paranormal romance is more accepting, more likely to forgive rather than chastise in real-life too? I think it would be interesting to see if the ability to forgive and respect the strange, monstrous hero translates into a real-world view different from non-paranormal romance readers.

Just a thought.
